Factory Transmissions
for Toyota Diesels
With most factory Toyota
diesels, the RPM range is greater so paying close attention to gearing
is not as important. Click here for more
information on this or see our section on axle
gearing for diesels.
In regards to which transmission
works were, here is what information I have assembled which can hopefully
be of some help:
-
3B Diesel
engines were availavble with 4 and 5 speed transmissions. They
share the same bolt pattern as F, 2F, & 3F gas engine but require a
special input shaft that is a different length and spline count as F or
H series gas & diesel engines. A H55F from a 3B Engine will not
work in a F or H series engine without getting this new input shaft.
It is also NOT the same shaft that is found in H or F series transmissions,
you must buy this part from Toyota.
-
F and H series engines share
the same bolt pattern and their transmissions are interchangable.
-
In the USA, F series engines
never came with a 5 speed, they only came with 3 speeds through 1973, 4
speeds from 1974 through 1987. In 1988, the 3FE was retrofitted with
an automatic transmission (A440F).
-
In Canada, from 1983 to 1987
both BJ60s and HJ60s came with the H55F 5 speed transmission.
-
In the USA the A440F was replaced
with the electonically controlled A442F automatice transmission in 1993.
The A440F and A442F have different bolt patterns, as does the 1FZ 24 Valve
Gas Engine (available in 1994) and the 3FE Gas Engine (available in 1992).
-
1HZ diesel
engines were equipped with either the H55F 5 speed transmission in
earlier applications while later applications were equipped with the H55F's
replacement, the H151F. The H151F will also bolt to a 1HD-T
while a H55F will not.
-
Both the H55F and H151F transmissions
are 5 speeds.
-
The H55F has a "low 1st gear"
at 4.8 to 1. H150 and H151F transioons have a 1st gear near 4.0 to
1.
