Timing a Diesel Engine
I recieved a bad piece of
advice that the timing was off on my fuel pump and therefore it should
be adjusted. With the right tools it can easily be returned to the
correct timing position but timing a diesel is not a quick and easy thing
unlike timing a gasser. However,
there
is no need to ever have to adjust the timing on a diesel.
When
turbo charging you do not need to adjust the timing of a
diesel and also unlike a gasser, altitude does not affect diesel timing.
Therefore you should never adjust the timing on a diesel.
The only time you need to is when you have removed the pump or if it has
somehow been messed with. If you do adjust your timing, unless you're
right on, it's better to have your timing retarded (after the factory spec)
versus before because you have a lesser risk of bottom end piston or bearing
damage.
