The new buyer of my HJ60
had asked several times before he decided to by the truck how AC could
be retrofitted into it. I told him AC could be rigged easily enough
from an FJ60. Eating my words, we ended up doing the conversion using
FJ60 parts but it was not as easy as we had thought it would be (though
it reality it was not super hard either). In the end in parts it
cost about $250 with a big break by purchasing all the FJ60's AC parts
from Henry Brimmer, editor of Toyota Trails
Magazine, for $100. This conversion was done by Royal Rose and
myself. With the added AC amplifier it has reached about $350 in
parts.
Things which complicated
the install a little bit:
1. We had to wire
the whole AC setup 12V via the 24 to 12V
converter.
2. We had to have
custom high pressure hoses made for the input and return line because the
AC compressor was moved to the factory 2H location versus the 2F location
on the other side of the truck with considerably shorter hoses. See
pictures of the hoses below.
3. The 2F circuit
board or "amplifier" was not suitable for the 2H conversion because inputs
available from the 2F (tach input, rev up output) that, when we bypassed,
also bypassed the temperature unit which which shuts off the AC when the
core gets too cold with potential for icing. Therefore, you'll also
need an AC controller "amplifier" from a 3B (if 12V, part # 88650-90A03)
or a 2H (24V part # 88650-90A04).
4. Regarding the bracket
that holds the compressor into place, buying the factory bracket certainly
would have made things a lot easier, but instead, mostly to keep costs,
down we flipped a 2F Alternator bracket upside down and welded a little
plate to the other side to get it to mount to factory holes on the head
of the engine just above the 2H alternator.
