Aftermarket Turbos for Naturally Aspirated Toyota Diesels

There are only two real companies I am aware of who manufacture aftermarket turbos for Toyota Diesels.  Both are in Australia where Toyota diesels are commonly found.

Safari Turbos probably manufactures a better unit than the AXT unit, according to sources in Australia, Safari is considered the "Mercedes Benz" of aftermarket diesel turbos.  They run about $1800 USD to have them shipped here.  From a conversation with them it was mentioned that it is very possible Safari will shortly discontinue manufacturing turbos for 2H and 3B models.

AXT does not have a web site but I would say Ray Hall Turbo Charging is probably the best source of information for AXT turbos.  I have never met someone who has installed a Safari Turbo, only an AXT as overall it is considered a good deal and of course makes a world of difference in power at 1800+ RPMs.  Both AXT and Safari Turbos are also waste gated.

Engines with AXT or Safari Turbos have higher output than their factory turbo charged versions.  Both also use Garrett turbos (which are very high quality) with custom manufactured housings.  Marks Adapter's (which is sold in the US through Advance Adapters) also sells AXT turbos.

As for home brews, we installed a generic Rajay non-wastegated turbo charger on a 2H that works wonderfully.  You can perhaps find a generic turbo charger and from there modify your engine to have the turbo's power without the added cost of a kit.

With Turbos, you also want to pay close attention to EGT's and timing.  You do NOT need to adjust the timing on a diesel when installing a turbo.
